I am not running a disco but I do bring amplification equipment and a mixer desk.  I can play music or let people play their own music over my system. Do we need a Performing Rights Society Licence? The PRS explained that they don't cover individuals, only premises.  If the premises has a licence, then we can use music.  However, they can't give me a licence as a Children's Entertainer. The good news is that if the party is in a home, then no licence is required. For more information, visit: www.mcps-prs-alliance.co.uk Balloons People often spread balloons over the floor where the party is to take place.  This looks nice but is not very practical.  It is hard to organise games when everyone is falling over balloons.  They also burst during the course of the event, which some children find upsetting. Balloons look great on the walls or hanging from the ceiling. Every child will get a balloon hat at the party, so it would help if other balloons weren't scattered around the floor, at least until after I have finished performing or running activities. CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) As a sole trader it is not legal for Ken to acquire a CRB for his business, this is a source of tension between many entertainers and the CRB system.  Nor is it legal for a sole trader to acquire one via a third party for his or her business.  Campaigners are currently working to try and find a resolution to this problem. The only reason Ken is able to say that he has a CRB check is because he belongs to a charity and they have to provide him with a CRB before he can do work for them.  It is worth noting that a CRB only provides a snapshot at a particular point in time.  It is therefore fortunate that Ken is actively involved with an organisation; this means that he is monitored by them and any transgression would be reported.  The organisation renews his CRB every three years.  Some local authorities want him to have it renewed every two years.  This is not possible, therefore, in the third year Ken would either not work for them, or they could provide him with a CRB for the work he does for them. Ken can forward a PDF file copy of his CRB to anyone who needs to see it.  It was issued on 26th April 2010. Best Practice Please note, Ken asks not to be left alone with the children at any time. The organisers remain responsible for the behaviour and care needs of the children.  Ken needs to be free to entertain.
